Slack administration: Manage workflow usage in Slack Connect conversations

Workflow managers can set access permissions that determine whether external people can use a workflow. Owners and admins can override these permissions to decide the following:

  • Whether external people can use workflows created by members of their workspace or Enterprise Grid organisation.
  • If their members can use workflows created by external people.


Choose who can run workflows

To decide who can use workflows in Slack Connect, follow the steps below.

Pro and Business+

Enterprise Grid

  1. From the   Home tab, click your workspace name in the sidebar.
  2. Select Tools & settings from the menu, then click Workspace settings.
  3. Click the Permissions tab.
  4. Next to Workflow usage for Slack Connect, click Expand.
  5. Tick or untick the boxes, then click Save.

Allow your members to use workflows created by external people

  1. From the   Home tab, click your organisation name in the sidebar.
  2. Select Tools & settings from the menu, then click Organisation settings.
  3. Click  Slack Connect in the left sidebar, then select Settings.
  4. Next to Using workflows created by external organisations, click Edit.
  5. Click the toggle on or off, then click Save.


Allow external people to use workflows created by your members

  1. From the   Home tab, click your organisation name in the sidebar.
  2. Select Tools & settings from the menu, then click Organisation settings.
  3. Click  Slack Connect in the left sidebar, then select Settings.
  4. Next to Using workflows created by [your organisation], click Edit.
  5. Click the toggle on or off, then click Save.


Adjust workflow permissions per external organisation

You can also customise who can use workflows in Slack Connect for each external organisation that you're connected to.
  1. From the   Home tab, click your organisation name in the sidebar.
  2. Select Tools & settings from the menu, then click Organisation settings.
  3. Click  Slack Connect in the left sidebar, then select Connections.
  4. Click the   three-dots icon next to the organisation that you'd like to customise, then select Universal
  5. Select either Member permissions or External people permissions.
  6. Select an option, then click on Save.


Workflow limitations

To protect your organisation, external people in Slack Connect conversations can’t start a workflow that contains the following steps:

If the workflow includes a button, external people can click the button to progress any workflow that was started by a member of your organisation.

*External users can’t start or progress a workflow if the connector step requires them to authenticate their third-party account.  

Note: Make sure to include external organisations in the Who can find and use this workflow access permission in Workflow Builder to allow them to use workflows in Slack Connect conversations.

Who can use this feature?
  • Org owners/admins (Enterprise Grid subscription) and workspace owners (Pro and Business+ subscriptions)
  • Available on paid subscriptions
