Create multi-workspace channels on Enterprise Grid

In an Enterprise Grid organization, multi-workspace channels connect workspaces together. For cross-functional groups who need to collaborate in Slack, this type of channel makes it possible. If you're an Org Owner or Admin, or a member with permission to manage these channels, read on for more details.


Understand multi-workspace channels

Get familiar with permissions and how to create and manage multi-workspace channels. We've outlined the basics below to help you get started.

Set permissions 

  • Org Owners and Org Admins can create, remove, and manage multi-workspace channels.
  • They can also decide which members have permission to take these actions.

Add a channel to other workspaces

  • Add any channel to other workspaces in the org, except for the #general channel.
  • These channels can also be org-wide, meaning they're discoverable by every member in the org, and even set as a default channel for all new members.
  • Some apps and custom bots may not be available in a multi-workspace channel.

Control channel access

Manage channel visibility

  • A multi-workspace channel can be public or private.
  • If public, the channel can be accessed by anyone in the org.
  • If it's private, it'll be limited to only the people you've added to that channel.


Create a multi-workspace channel

Step 1:  Find or create your channel

  1. From your desktop, open Slack.
  2. Navigate to an existing channel, or create a new channel.


Step 2: Add it to other workspaces

  1. Click  Details in the top right.
  2. Click  More, then select Additional options.
  3. Select Add to other [Org name] workspaces.
  4. Choose specific workspaces or all workspaces in the org. 
  5. Click Review Changes.
  6. When you’re done, click Save changes.


Remove access to a multi-workspace channel

Should access to a channel need to change, you can update the workspaces it's available to. Here’s how to remove a channel’s access from a workspace:

  1. From your desktop, open the channel you'd like to add to other workspaces.
  2. Click  Details in the top right.
  3. Click  More, then select Additional options.
  4. Select Add to other [Org name] workspaces.
  5. Click  next to workspaces that should no longer have access to the channel.
  6. Click Review Changes.
  7. When you’re done, click Save changes.
Who can use this feature?
  • Org Owners and Org Admins, and sometimes members
  • Available on the Enterprise Grid plan
