Change your Slack theme

To change the color of your workspace, choose a new theme, or create your own custom theme.

Tip: If you’d like a darker look for Slack, learn how to turn on dark mode from your preferences.

Choose a new theme

If you use multiple workspaces, try selecting a different theme for each one to help you quickly tell them apart. Your new theme will appear whenever you open that workspace on any device or in your browser.

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Click Themes.
  4. Below Colors, select a theme.

Note: When you have dark mode turned on, the existing options for sidebar themes will look different (and darker) than they do in light mode. Custom themes will look the same in light and dark mode.

Tip: In your Themes preferences, you'll find accessible themes that some people with color-blindness have found helpful.

Customize your theme

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Click Themes.
  4. Below Colors, click Create a custom theme. Enter any six-digit HTML color value, or click a color swatch to choose from the color picker.

Share a custom Slack theme

Your custom theme will only be visible to you, but you can share it with other coworkers by clicking the Copy button below Copy and paste these values to share your custom theme with others. Paste your theme into any channel or direct message and members can click the Switch sidebar theme button from their desktop to start using it.

Tip: When you paste any 6-digit color value into Slack, we’ll display a small swatch for each color. 🎨✨

Set custom colors

Once you’ve chosen a theme, you can choose specific colors for different areas of Slack if you’d like.

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the sidebar.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click Themes.
  4. Next to Theme Colors, click Customize. Select a color swatch to choose a color for each theme element, then click Save.

Import a custom theme

Slack themes are comprised of a series of six-digit hex codes, ex.: #4A154B. To further customize your theme, you can create a series of 10 hex codes or import your legacy theme.

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the sidebar.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click Themes.
  4. Next to Theme Colors, click   Import theme.
  5. Paste your hex codes into the text box (be sure to separate each code with a comma) or click Paste your legacy theme colors, then click Apply.

Note: Legacy theme colors are available only for the theme you last used before Slack was updated to the new design. For any other colors, you’ll need to know the hex codes you’d like to use while we work to enhance theme customization options.

Set themes preferences

There are two other themes preferences you can set:

  • Window gradient
Decide whether your windows are a solid color or have a gradient.
  • Darker sidebars
Some themes’ default brightness will automatically darken the sidebar. If your theme doesn’t support this by default, you can opt for a darker sidebar.
  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click Themes.
  4. Next to Theme Colors, click Customize.
  5. Check the box next to the preference(s) you’d like to set, then click Save.

Tip: On certain Mac devices, you can turn window transparency off from the Accessibility section of your preferences.
