Tips for working with Slack AI

Slack AI draws from information you and your coworkers share in Slack to help you work more efficiently. Here’s what you can do:

  • Summarize channels, direct messages (DMs), and threads
  • Search for answers to questions
  • Get a daily recap of less important channels

Summarize conversations

Generating an AI summary for a channel

Whether you’ve been away from Slack for a couple of hours or a couple of weeks, you can use Slack AI summaries to get up to speed quickly. Give it a try:

  1. Open a channel, DM, or thread.
  2. Click the   Summarize icon.
  3. For channels and DMs, choose an option (only unread messages, the last seven days of messages, or messages from a custom date range) to generate your summary.

Find answers to questions

Searching with Slack AI to get answers to questions

Since Slack AI relies on conversations in Slack rather than the internet at large, answers to questions you search for are based only on Slack messages you can access. So unless you work in ecology, you’re unlikely to have luck with questions like “Do platypuses lay eggs?”

Search tips

Search with AI

  • Keep it (fairly) simple
Ask Slack AI a question like you’d ask a friend. Straightforward questions and those that start with “What” or “How” (for example, “How do I request content translations?” or “What does EOD stand for?”) tend to work best.
  • Lean on citations
It’s a good idea to refer to the source messages included alongside answers from Slack AI. Hover over the number in brackets to view a snippet of a message referenced in an AI answer, or click on it to view the original message.
  1. Click the search field at the top of Slack.
  2. Type your question into the search field and press Enter.
  3. A Slack AI answer will appear at the top of your search results.

Tip: Slack AI can also return results for keyword searches where it’s likely a response would be helpful, for example “Project Acme timeline” or “engineering offsite dates.”

Read a daily recap

Adding channels to a Slack AI recap

There might be channels in your workspace you want to keep tabs on, but don’t need to read or post in multiple times a day. Slack AI can deliver a recap of what happened in those channels once a day so you can stay focused on what’s most important the rest of the time. Check it out:

  1. From your desktop, select   Recap in your sidebar.
  2. If you haven’t set up your recap yet, click Choose Channels to get started. If you have, scroll to read through it.
  3. Click the   arrow icon next to any highlight in your recap to view more details. Recaps include citations you can select to view the original message.

Note: You can easily mute channels in your recap to keep your sidebar tidy. Click the   gear icon in the top-right corner to mute (or unmute) channels.
