Add display name guidelines

Members can use display names to have coworkers @mention them in Slack by their first names or nicknames. As an owner of a workspace or Enterprise Grid organization, you can add guidelines for members to follow when setting their display names.


Set custom display name guidelines

Free, Pro, and Business+ plans

Enterprise Grid plan

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the sidebar.
  2. Select Tools & settings from the menu, then click Workspace settings.
  3. Click the Settings tab.
  4. Next to Display Name Guidelines, click Expand.
  5. Select Custom Guidelines and enter your instructions for members.
  6. Click Save.

Workspace level

Workspace Owners can set display name guidelines for their workspace(s):

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the sidebar.
  2. Select Tools & settings from the menu, then click Workspace settings.
  3. Click the Settings tab.
  4. Next to Display Name Guidelines, click Expand.
  5. Select Custom Guidelines and enter your instructions for members.
  6. Click Save.

Organization level

Org Owners and Admins can set an organization policy with display name guidelines for all workspaces in their org:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the sidebar.
  2. Select Tools & settings from the menu, then click Organization settings
  3. Click  Settings in the left column.
  4. Select Organization Policies.
  5. Click Display name guidelines, then Add policy.
  6. Select Custom Guidelines and enter your instructions for members.
  7. Click Save Policy. Then, click Create Policy to confirm.

  • Workspace Owners and Org Owners/Admins
  • Available on all plans
